This was the original species name of pineapple sage but was subject to a name change to elegans late last century. Most nurseries leave it as rutilans as their labels say that and they are not too worried about being exact anyway.
Pineapple sage grows towards 2m high in favourable conditions or less if you give it a good slash to the ground in summer. Autumn flowering. These days ‘Golden Delicious’ is a more interesting plant with the same red flowers you can suck but golden foliage if grown in the sun.
