Recommended Varieties
The beauty of salvias is their exceptionally long flowering period. In coastal areas some can flower year round. Some have particularly good foliage.

The following is a list of salvias with exceptional merit. Everyone should have these ones:

Salvia buchananii because the flowers are gorgeous and it flowers for so long.

Salvia chamaedryoides because the grey foliage always looks good and it is very well behaved and useful for host and dry conditions.

Salvia Marine Blue is similar but is a bit darker blue and taller growing. It is a great plant.

Salvia chamelaeagnea is perhaps the best for drought. It is long flowering, frost hardy and only grows 1m high.

Salvia chiapensis is so long flowering, even in shade. It is frost tender.

Salvia forskaohlei is great unless you have a very small garden. It has incredibly large base foliage and lots of blue flowers in summer.

Salvia gesneriiflora because it is showy for so long. It is the largest plant and has very large bright red flowers. It is not the best for heavy frost.
