This is a tough New Zealand hybrid imported into Australia in 2007. The parents are thought to be scabra and chamelaeagnea.
It is a particularly beautiful plant for its pretty mauvy blue flowers and bright green foliage. It is evergreen, very drought hardy and extremely long flowering.
In three years it might reach two metres but I think it would be suitable to hedge or keep below a metre if you wanted to.
Please note that salvia uliginosa is being called ‘African Skies’ which could lead to confusion.
It was named thus in England, quite misleadingly, as uliginosa is South American. Uliginosa has just begun to be called African Skies in Australia.
‘African Skies’ does not appear to be any different to the ordinary uliginosa which has been about a long time in Australia.
It is quite invasive and easy for nurserymen to grow and sell without explaining its invasive qualities first.
